Battling the elements, especially the wind, doesn't have to stop us riding, but we should all exercise caution when riding in exceptionally string winds. Here are some tips:
- Ill fitting clothes catch the wind and increase drag
- Wear eye protection, clear lenses on dull days and sunglasses on a sunny day
- Think about face protection when the temperature is low and there is a high wind chill
- Try not to grip your handlebars too tightly
- Keep your arms and shoulders relaxed to absorb those sudden gusts of wind and try to grip your bars firmly
- When the wind really is too strong think about training indoors
- Ride low making yourself more aero dynamic when riding into the wind or in crosswinds
- Watch yourself taking a drink where you have to remove your hands from your bars
- Be very careful overtaking lorries and they can cause unpredicatble gusts of wind
My advice:
Keep low in corners, because you don't always know how the wind is going to be round the other side. Being low helps you stabilise your bike better.
